STI Intensive
Target Audience
Physicians, midlevel practitioners (PA, NP), nurses, and other health professionals who see patients with or at risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Course Description
This course, an intensive overview of STIs, includes 14 hours of lecture over two days. Topics presented include: gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, trichomoniasis, PID, genital herpes, HPV, hepatitis B, chancroid, urethritis/cervicitis syndromes, pediculosis/ scabies, HIV/AIDS, prevention strategies / PrEP / EPT, and case studies.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand current STI epidemiological patterns
- Describe clinical features of common bacterial STIs: syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia
- Recognize clinical presentations of common viral STIs: genital herpes, HPV
- Discuss clinical characteristics of common vaginal infections: trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis
- Demonstrate improved skills in completing STI history and physical exam.
- Integrate HIV risk assessment into patient care.
- Demonstrate universal precautions during specimen collection.
- Describe current approaches to STI/HIV prevention including pre-exposure prophylaxis and expedited partner therapy.
- Discuss evidence-based strategies for STI treatment, according to CDC’s STI Treatment Guidelines.
